We meet at 8:30 a.m. in the town of West Yellowstone, Montana on the first morning.
Day One
We gather in West Yellowstone, organize and distribute gear, load our packs and drive 2 hours to the Bechler Ranger Station and our trailhead. The trip begins and ends here. After a picnic lunch, well hike through Bechler Meadows to a beautiful camp along the Bechler River. (6 miles).
Day Two
After a leisurely start, we hike into the Bechler Canyon, which is lined with cliffs, thermal areas, waterfalls and outstanding scenery. Tonight, we camp near Colonnade Falls. (3.7 miles).
Day Three
Again a leisurely start, and a gentle hike to a camp near the uppermost reaches of the Bechler River, spending two nights at this site. (3.7 miles) We view numerous thermal features and enjoy a good soak in an exquisite hot pot.
Day Four
Today is our layover day at the same campsite. We soak, explore, or do a more rigorous hike to little visited backcountry features.
Day Five
Today, we hike down the canyon to Bechler Meadows and camp at our previous site along the Bechler River. (7.4 miles).
Day Six
We follow the Bechler River downstream to its junction with the Falls River, admiring additional waterfalls along the way. (6.5 miles).
Total hiking distance is 27.8 miles.
The hike begins at 6250 feet, rises to 7250 and ends back at 6250 feet.
There are several (small) river fords.
