Northwest Corner: Black Butte Trail
We begin this three-day trip at the Black Butte Trailhead. Day one consists of a short hike to a large meadow where we set up the first camp beside Black ButteCreek. We spend day two at the same camp as it gives up the opportunity to day hike to the summit of Bighorn Peak. The trail to the top of Big Horn Peak climbs to 9900 feet and offers outstanding views as well as the chance to see the herd of Mountain Goats that call this area home. On the final day, we will break camp and hike up and over a ridge to the Daly Creek Drainage. We follow Daly Creek, through a large meadow, back to trailhead. Hiking distance of this loop trip is approximately 7 miles total, with virtually unlimited day hiking. We also have the option of hiking this route in the reverse direction. There is a good chance you may hear wolves howling. Moose, deer, elk and bears also frequent this area and it is a very good trip for animal viewing.

Northwest Corner: Fan Creek / Specimen Creek
This excellent four-day trip begins at the Fawn Pass Trailhead. We follow the trail through a beautiful meadow along Fan Creek for 5 miles to our first camp. The next day we continue following the Meadow and Fan Creek until we cross over a thickly forested ridge into the Specimen Creek drainage. Another 5-mile day brings us to our second camp, where we will layover for a day. This layover gives us access to fabulous day hikes, such as the 3.5 mile hike to High Lake where anglers can try their luck fishing for some of Yellowstone’s famous native cutthroat trout. Our final day of the trip follows the beautiful east fork of Specimen Creek down 8 miles of gentle terrain. On the way, you get a first-hand opportunity to see how the forest is rejuvenating itself from the 1988 forest fires that passed through much of Yellowstone National Park. Specimen creek broadens delightfully at the confluence of the north and east forks of the creek and we continue to follow it as it meanders the remaining two miles to the Sportsman Lake Trailhead.
On our three-day version of this trip, we hike about 7 miles to our first campsite in a large meadow (with good wildlife watching opportunities), and about 8 miles on day two. This trip does not include a layover day. We spend more time at our second campsite along the banks of Specimen Creek and hike out 2.5 miles to the trailhead on the last day.
Note: This trip requires several creek crossings so you should come prepared with an additional pair of shoes or sandals designated for this purpose.

North Region: Black Canyon of the Yellowstone
In the early summer and fall, we suggest the Black Canyon trek. This is a three-day trip. We will cross large open meadows and then descend into the canyon, cross a bridge and hike along the rushing Yellowstone River. Our comfortable campsite is right along the river in a beautiful location. This area is considered to have some of the best trout fishing in the U.S. We will spend two nights here to allow for the opportunity of several nice day hikes along the river, including a trip to Knowles Falls. This is a great trip for families and those wanting to get a taste of fly fishing in Yellowstone. Total mileage: approximately 10.
These are samples of popular treks. We can suggest more to you and will be updating this page to include other trips, such as “”Pebble Creek Trail”, “Lamar River Trail”, and others. We look forward to discussing these with you.
